I found this great quote in a book that I recently read for one of my political science courses:
"We are at our best when challenged to do great things, to move beyond our familiar comfort level."
- Larry J. Sabato in A More Perfect Constitution
The author meant to inspire Americans to re-examine the nation's foundational documents, but these words also reminded me of something very important. When I reflect on my brief life experience, I can recognize that the things (and people) that challenged me have really made me who I am today. This knowledge inspires me to persevere through difficult times and try new things.
So, in short. A quick thank you to those of you who have challenged me: my family, my teachers, my coaches, and my true friends.

In Summer, the song sings itself.
"In Summer, the song sings itself." -William Carlos Williams
It's been quite a while since I have posted anything here. My purpose for this blog continues to shift; begun as a place to gather my thoughts then applied as part of an assignment for a communications course, I continue now to use this blog as a space to express my thoughts, reflect on recent events, and share exciting news as it comes to me. If you choose to read, that is wonderful. Feel welcome to join in the conversation.
The quote from Williams seems appropriate for this time of year. For me, summer means coming home to friends, family, and financial security. I love living in a place where it's rare to meet someone who doesn't know your name or you at least have a mutual friend. It's wonderful to have that community feeling. At the same time, the community here can be very closed-minded. It's those times that I really miss being away at school. (I am very lucky to attend college at a place where everyone is given space to comfortably express themselves.) However, not even ignorance and intolerance can silence that Summer song for long when I am surrounded by good friends and strong drinks.
To me, that Summer song features the melody of water cascading over the rocks in the creek, crickets and bullfrogs adding their own harmonies, and the percussion of logs crackling in the fire. I love being outdoors in the Summer. There really is nothing better than beers around the campfire, sharing stories and staring up at the stars.
